This first level Teacher Training course is led by BCRPA TFL Lela Dawson. Lela is an experienced teacher trainer with a proven record of developing exceptional group Mat Pilates fitness instructors. She has created a warm learning environment designed specifically for the student that wants hands on instruction and plenty of time to practice teaching the movements with their peers.
Practice teaching along with meaningful feedback from your teacher trainer, will develop your skills and confidence to demonstrate, cue and teach each Pilates exercises. In addition you will learn the Pilates breath patterns and how to modify and progress each movement to fully prepare you to be able to instruct a safe and effective beginner to intermediate Mat Pilates fitness class.
You are a good candidate for this training if you have a personal Pilates practice of at least 8-10+ Pilates Mat classes. You are curious to discover more about the Pilates method. You have a desire to teach and share the benefits of Pilates to others. Or, perhaps you already have some teaching experience and wish to incorporate Pilates Mat movements into your existing classes or personal training sessions.
BCRPA approved and accredited. This course balances exercise design and anatomy learned in Fitness Theory ( Learn More ) with the Pilates Theories, Principles and History that will enable the student to discover the genius and the benefits of the Pilates method.
Focusing on the Fundamental Mat movements, the student will learn the primary intention of each Pilates fundamental exercise, develop the skills to cue effectively while discovering the brilliance of the Pilates Mat sequencing.
Upon course completion, the student is required to complete an 8 hour practicum* (practice teaching) with a mentor and pass the Instructor evaluation (ICE) test-out for certification as a BCRPA First Level Mat Pilates Fitness Instructor. (*see more information below)
100% attendance in all session dates listed above. Active participation as well completion of homework assignments, a minimum of 6 hours of self practice and 4 class observations is required for course completion.
Registration also includes: The ability to use one Lela D zoom class toward the four required class observations.

To apply for acceptance into this Teacher Training session, please go to our CONTACT page. Include a brief description of your teaching experience (if any) and your personal Pilates practice. We would also like to know what has inspired you to want to teach Mat Pilates and if you would like to attend in-studio or via zoom.
Upon completion of the Mat Pilates Fitness teacher training course you will need to complete a minimum of eight (8) practicum hours under the guidance of an experienced Pilates teacher.
The goal of the practicum is to gain experience teaching actual students in a group setting. Your Pilates mentor will provide you with encouragement, teaching tips and feedback after each session that you will apply in your next class. After completion of the Practicum you will be a stronger, more confident Pilates Fitness Instructor. ready for your ICE and ready to teach your own class.
As a Lela D Pilates graduate, Lela will assist you in finding an experienced Pilates mentor to work with. She also offers Practicum Kick Start sessions several times each year. (see below for the next session)

Practicum Kick Start

This unique opportunity has been designed to provide practicum teaching experience in-person or on zoom to a cohort of new instructors that may not have a space to teach at or a mentor to work with.
The trainee will teach four classes to a group of participants under the supervision and mentorship of Lela Dawson, BCRPA TFL. Each trainee will be provided individual feedback & encouragement after each class to assist in their Pilates teaching development. The Practicum Kickstart will provide 4 Practicum hours to the trainee.
A cohort minimum of 3, and maximum of 4 trainees is required.

One to one Practicum Mentoring
If you already have a Pilates mentor, great! If not, Lela D Pilates offers several one to one practicum options that will provide you with feedback and encouragement after each practice class.
Lela will match you up with a senior Pilates Fitness teacher or she will work one on one with you as your mentor.

It is also appropriate for the busy instructors that would like to attend a workshop within their schedule on a topic that is relevant to their development skills.
The Pilates Mat Tutoring Workshop is offered at $320 + GST and provides 5 BCRPA CECs.
